Kristi asked:
Ive heard that if you have heartburn your whole pregnancy that you’ll have a baby with full head of hair. Ive also heard that if the baby is more active at night that when its born it has the nights and daytime mixed up. Either one true or has anyone had experience with this? Just wondering cus I have both issues going on. Ive had horrible heartburn and at night I swear I am going to give birth to a NINJA! Thanks for any answers! (but please dont be rude just to get points)

I can only answer through experience my daughter had a head of hair and i had bad heart burn with my son a had a little and he had hair but not as much as my daughter. As for the day and night i think my son was active as soon as i went to bed and he was restless but all new borns are so its hard to know what to believe.

well i didn’t have any heartburn with either of my kids and they were bald till about a yr. My cousin on the other hand had horrible heartburn and her kids had full sets of hair. Don’t really know about the activity at night, generally thats because your walking all day rocks them to sleep so when you settle down they wake up. All three of mine have been active at night, daughter was awake 20 hours a day for the first month. she wasn’t fussy just didn’t want to miss anything. (before she was born they all told me don’t worry they sleep most the day). My son was a morning baby from day 1. he’ll wake up at 4 and go till about 11 till he needed a nap then crash early in the evening. When this little boy makes his arrival next month I’ll let you know which way he goes.

christ, some is true some isn’t….
Hair….yes, its upsetting, if you have heartburn when pregnant your baby WILL have a good head of hair.
Most babies in utero are more active at night simply because we are resting…..can you imagine trying to swim around when we’re running all over the place. Babies dont’ have night and day…..they sleep most of the time, they wake to feed and thats it the first few weeks. They dont’ know day from night.
Thought I would add some more that have held true to everyone I know:
Shoot, might have this one backwards. If memory serves me right…a slower heartbeat is a boy, a faster heart beat a girl.
If you carry low, you feel like you always have to put your hand under your belly, its a boy. If you carry high, you’re always leaning back a bit, its a girl…..
high and low get into “The Plate”, if you can balance a plate to eat off of on your tummy, then its high and its a girl. Consequently if you can’t its a boy..
The silver needle and silk thread work too, get this, it can be any needle and any thread……circle is a boy, back and forth is a girl. It has worked for every pregnancy for all my friends for the last 20 years.
Want me to freak you out a bit more? Place a threaded needle into a pencil eraser. Hold the end of the knotted thread with your primarly hand, hold it so it is an inch or so above your other palm. It will start to vibrate and will show you the order and number of your children. It will be obvious…it will stop and shake a bit between children….freaky……

I had bad heartburn, and he had a little hair, but it is not true =)
As for up at night, when you are moving around during the day, you are rocking him, so he is soothed and sleeping. When you hold still, he wakes up. Just like a baby in your arms- if you walk with him he is quiet, the minute you relax he starts crying.
I do not think infants really have days and nights. I think it is an expersssion. I said that about my son when he came home, but did not really mean it. They learn days and nights, but they are not accustomed to being on the outside, waiting for food, warmth, etc! Congrats and have fun. I think I am pregnant too- wooohoo!

My daughter had a full head of hair and I never had heartburn. I don’t think that it is due to hair growth.
During pregnancy, the placenta produces the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. This hormone also relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up, which causes that unpleasant burning sensation.
Progesterone also slows down the wavelike contractions of your esophagus and intestines, making digestion sluggish. Later in pregnancy, your growing baby crowds your abdominal cavity, pushing the stomach acids back up into the esophagus.
Avoid food and beverages that cause you gastrointestinal distress. The usual suspects are carbonated drinks; alcohol (which you should avoid anyway during pregnancy); caffeine; chocolate; acidic foods like citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, mustard, and vinegar; processed meats; mint products; and spicy, highly seasoned, fried, or fatty foods. Don’t eat big meals. Instead, eat several small meals throughout the day. Take your time eating and chew thoroughly. Avoid drinking large quantities of fluids during meals — you don’t want to distend your stomach. (It’s important to drink eight to ten glasses of water daily during pregnancy, but sip it between meals.) Try chewing gum after eating. Chewing gum stimulates your salivary glands, and saliva can help neutralize acid. Don’t eat close to bedtime. Give yourself two to three hours to digest before you lie down. Sleep propped up with several pillows or a wedge. Elevating your upper body will help keep your stomach acids where they belong and will aid your digestion. Gain a sensible amount of weight, and stay within the guidelines your healthcare provider suggests. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid any tightness around your waist and tummy. Bend at the knees instead of at the waist.
Regarding the movement that is also not true. A baby can’t really tell day by night in your stomach, they don’t know what that is just yet. My baby would wake up at night and keep me awake during the night with her kicking and wiggling around. She is 6 month old and loves sleeping during the night, it’s a different story during the day. By day 2 after her birth she learned what day and night was and starting sleeping at night (even if that involved waking up every 2 hours to eat).
I remember reading about this. When you are walking around you are lulling the baby to sleep, but when you lie down the movement stops and the baby wakes up. When the baby is up it wants to move around. That is also the reason why the baby calms down when you are rocking him/her because they are used to that sensation while in the stomach.
All the old wives tales were not true for me. Every one told me that I will have a boy ( the stomach, the needle, the Drano, palm facing up, you name it it pointed to a boy) and even I believed it, imagine the surprise when my OB said it’s a girl.
Here are some websites that try to separate the myths from the truth

I’ve heard this wives tale forever. I had 4 kids, all born with full heads of hair and no heartburn. My cousin, on the other hand, daughter had full head of hair and she had heartburn galore. I think it just depends on your diet. My children were very active, especially my twins. I swear they were doing aerobics in there. They moved so much, after they were born, I had bruised ribs. Good luck.

i had heartburn with my last two babies. They both had lots of hair, and their hair grows fast.
My first baby (i’ve had three altogether) i didnt have heartburn and she didnt get hair until she was two years old. Poor poor bald baby.
About the baby being up at night, and kicking at night, this happened with all my kids. This is more than a wives tale actually, its common sense I think….
here think about it like this, while you walk around during the day, the baby is feeling the movements and it lulls them to sleep. Then you lay down at night and the baby wakes up and moves around because theres not as much movement lulling them to sleep. You’ll notice once you have that little sweet pea that rocking and swaying will lull them to sleep. And once you lay them down in their bed alone and still…..WAAAAAAAAA!
baby no likey.
Theres also the idea that the baby is always doing the same amount of movements, but that the mom feels it more at night because she is trying to relax and not concentrating on anything else. I dont agree with this, my son was 10.5 lbs and I ALWAYS knew when he was kicking.

I had heartburn something fierce with my daughter and she came out with a head full of pitch black hair. I’m also pregnant but haven’t had heartburn until recently and I’m 37 weeks so who know with this one. He’ll probably be a Mr Clean look-alike knowing my luck
I’ve heard the one about the days and nights but my daughter was sleeping most the night by 2 months so I’m not sure abou that one. If it’s true I’m gonna be in trouble then cause like you I have a ninja at night.

I had terrible heartburn and my son was born with a full head of hair.

My son was born a full head of hair & every constantly asked me if I had a lot heart burn & I didn’t have any my whole pregnancy. I don’t think they are true.
May 9th, 2000 - 8:29 am
I din’t have any morning sickness but I had heartburn so bad it made me sick… My son was born with no hair! I’m going to say that one is a myth!
He was also very active and constantly moving. I think when they’re newborns and waking up to eat every two hours (no matter what time of day) it always seems like they have no sense of time. He did settle into a regular routine around 2 month though and has slept well at night ever since. I’m going to say that one’s a myth too!

While I was pregnant with my daughter I had heartburn for the last 4 months and she had a full head of hair when she was born! She also kicked me all day and night, she woke me every night at 3:30 with kicks and punches. She has been sleeping through the night since she was 4 weeks old, as a matter of fact I had to wake her up at 10:30 this morning! Hope you are as lucky as I am! Good luck!
